Locals Only? Haskell's Beach Scope Hearing

The Haskell's Beach condo project that The Bacara had tried to ram through the General Plan last year with 13 amendments is finally beginning to hear input from the public (Noozhawk). A scoping hearing last Thursday brought this interesting comment from Michael Lunsford from the Gaviota Coast Conservancy on The Bacara's request for changes to the General Plan:

“The question is, ‘Would this kind of treatment be given to me or any other homeowner in the city of Goleta?’” he asked. “It’s been my experience that you don’t get past the planning desk until you’re consistent. And yet, in this case, we have a massive change.

“I’m afraid that what you’re doing is setting yourself up for a constitutional issue of equal treatment,” he said. “The rooms that are being anticipated are larger than my remodeled house. I suspect that is consistent with most people who live in Goleta.”

Interesting argument as there has been some question in the past as to the more typical beach public access approach (taken by others in the hearing I am sure). Now that the massive changes The Bacara proposed are public -- at least the plan can take public input. Members of the public who missed the scope hearing may submit written comments to Goleta City Hall until 5:30 p.m. April 16.

Sign up Santa Barbara Running Strong Core Class!

Sign ups are now open for the Fall session of Santa Barbara Running Strong held Friday mornings at 6am at Santa Barbara Running Company in Goleta.SBRS is a mat Pilates class designed to develop and strengthen the core and stabilizing muscles that a runner needs in order to support an efficient stride all the while helping to prevent injuries.  The Fall session will run from September 7th through November 16th.  The cost is $150 due either before or on the first day of class to reserve your spot.  Class is limited to 20 participants and is already over half full.  Participants will need to bring their own mat to class; however, home baked treats for the teacher are discouraged.Please contact: drea@twomotivate.com to sign up.--

Here is your workout:

Warmup for 40minutes EASY, DO STRIDES x 5-6, then assemble to your normal pace groups to begin.

St.George Marathoners: Start in front on Tennis Courts on Side Walk adjacent Cathedral Oaks and do the 2 mile out and back TWICE for a total of 8miles (East on Cathedral Oaks, left on Glen Annie/Storke Rd to the end, turn around back to start and repeat)

Everyone else doing CIM or NYC or Grand Prix, you will do the St.George out and Back ONCE (4 miles) for at Tempo/threshold effort (~10-15sec per mile faster than goal marathon pace at this point)

Canon PowerShot SX50 HS hands-on

Sure the SX160 is a bit of a bulky superzoom, but it's got nothing on Canon's beefy PowerShot SX50 HS. As with the similarly named SX500 IS, the SX50's got a big, protruding lens and flash, though the added girth make it look a bit more like a DSLR. Part of its width can no doubt be chalked up to its 2.8-inch vari-angle LCD, which can be swiveled away from the body of the camera to help vary viewing angles. Also, like the SX50, the SX500 has a devoted button for Zoom Framing Assist, which does a quick zoom out to help you reframe subjects on the fly.

Above the display you'll find a play button and a cushioned viewfinder. To its right, you've got the Record, Display, Menu and access to settings like Macro and ISO. You'll find the rest to the settings -- plus ON / OFF and access to that big 50x zooming to the right of the flash. The PowerShot SX50 HS will run you $480 when it drops next month.
